Matt Overend (b. 1950) will present landscapes, still lifes, interior paintings and nudes. Overend is a native of Las Vegas who grew up in Atlanta and has lived in Smoaks, S.C., since 1981. He's been a mainstay of the South Carolina art scene for decades and is represented in the South Carolina State Art Collection, managed by the S.C. Arts Commission. Overend has been featured in four if ART Gallery exhibitions in the past five years. Overend in 1973 graduated as an aerospace engineer at Georgia Tech before studying art at Santa Barbara City College in California, the University of California at Santa Barbara and Yale University.

For its December 2008 exhibition, if ART Gallery presents The Salon I & II, an exhibition at two Columbia, SC, locations: if ART Gallery and Gallery 80808/Vista Studios. On Thursday, December 11, 2008, 5 – 10 p.m., if ART will hold opening receptions at both locations. The ifART Walk will be on Lady and Lincoln Streets, between both locations, which are around the corner from each other.

The exhibitions will present art by if ART Gallery artists, installed salon-style at both Gallery 80808 and if ART. Artists in the exhibitions include two new additions to if ART Gallery, Columbia ceramic artist Renee Rouillier and the prominent African-American collage and mixed-media artist Sam Middleton, an 81-year-old expatriate who has lived in the Netherlands since the early 1960s.

Matt Overend is a native of Las Vegas who grew up in Atlanta and has lived in Smoaks, S.C., since 1981. He was with Janet Orselli in an if ART exhibition in March 2005 at Vista Studios in Columbia, S.C. In the past two years, he has had solo exhibitions in Hilton Head, Camden, Charleston, all in South Carolina, and in Charlotte, N.C. Overend in 1973 graduated as an aerospace engineer at Georgia Tech before studying art at Santa Barbara City College in California, the University of California at Santa Barbara and Yale University.

Painting buildings is a return to the 1980s for him, Matt Overend says. “They go back to some non-representational, even hard-edge work I did then. I also did some architectural paintings, but more importantly, I used the straight edge a lot and a T-square instead of free-handing it. That came out of my training as an engineer. It seemed as natural to me as using a brush.”

The new paintings easily are recognizable as Overend’s. They have less in common with, say, the architectural paintings of South Carolina artists such as Edward Rice or David Yaghjian than with California’s Richard Diebenkorn, one of Overend’s influences. They relate directly to Overend’s road studies and studio still lifes of the past two decades.

The palette remains distinctly Overend’s, even as the particular combination and interaction of large blocks of color sometimes gives the impression of new color schemes. Also, his canvases still have a dry look. And his compositions maintain their spatial, flat and sparse qualities, in his Facade paintings even more so than before.

Empty Lot is the architectural cousin of some of Overend’s familiar road studies. The lonely lamppost echoes the solitary tree, and the parking lot, the open rural spaces of some of his road studies. The lines marking parking spaces steer the viewer’s eye, not unlike the edge-of-road or center-of-the-road lines do.

But Empty Lot is about Overend’s quest to explore the vibration between non-representation and the pictorial, the particular. The lamppost, its shadow and the imaginary line between their ends form the abstract element, the triangle, while the lamps are anecdotal. “I am trying to see how far I can push the non-representational,” Overend says. “Sometimes I think I don’t push it enough.”

“The lines of the parking spaces in Empty Lot are what Canadian composer Glenn Gould would call ‘extra little things of interest.’ You always wonder, are they just good for business or are they actually necessary for the image you are trying to make? You constantly have to make decisions about whether a mark is valid as a mark or just pictorially.”

Black Barn is about the relationship between the asymmetrical barn and the cast-shadow triangle. “I’ve been trying to paint that barn for 15 years,” Overend says. “I took numerous pictures of it in all kinds of light, figuring out how the shadow works.”

In his Facade paintings, Overend takes the interaction between abstraction and representation to a new level. Triangles, rectangles and upside-down Ls double as walls, doors and shadows. Through asymmetrical compositions featuring high walls moving from the edge of the canvas toward the center, Overend upped the ante in his exploration of spatial depth and flatness. The compositions can be read inside out, with the wall in the back “moving” to the front. “All that seems as real to me as anything,” Overend says, “as real as what I see when I walk outside.”

Although most of Matt Overend’s paintings are of recognizable scenes and objects, they are not primarily about them. He does not simply try to make a painting but, as he puts it, find the art in the painting. “My paintings are an exploration of the structural relationship between gesture, shape, and space through the manipulation of color and texture.”

Overend borrows gestural ideas and shapes from life and turns them into abstract and formal elements. The edge of a book or table thus provides a line, while the edge of a bowl or cup provides an ellipse or arc. Windowpanes or their shadows might create a web of fat or thin dark stripes. Many of his studio still lifes, especially his solitary flower arrangements or lonely cups on or against a flat, barren surface, amount to rigid compositions of horizontal, contrasting dark and light-colored bands and lines. They remind some of Mark Rothko’s basic composition but may relate more to a Barnett Newman painting turned ninety degrees. Newman’s work certainly informs Overend’s non-representational paintings.

In the studio still lifes and in Overend’s landscapes, part of the interaction is between flat space and depth. A road cuts through a painted landscape bending diagonally toward the horizon, creating perspective within the flat space of shrubs and foliage and sky. In his still lifes, Overend’s containers, cups, vases, and fruit have depth, frequently accentuated by long shadows, but they often sit on a plane so flat you expect them to slide off the painting. The real seems unreal.

The marriage of traditional subject matter and formal modernism and of flat and deep space is reminiscent of one of Overend’s influences, West-Coast painter Richard Diebenkorn. It echoes Henri Mattise, too. That Overend also makes non-representational paintings is entirely in line with his abstracted approach to his representational work. So is the sparseness of his scenes, his tendency to eliminate much from them, clear the space, and create a sense of solitude. His non-representational paintings are merely the logical conclusion of this approach.

Overend’s use of vibrant, non-naturalistic colors suggests the influence of early 20th century European Fauves such as André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck. Both in color and texture, the presence of mid-20th century Russian-French painter Nicolas de Staël is evident, too. Still, Overend’s colors combine vigor with a restraint and understated quality that allows them to be unusual yet believable as actually existing in nature or in his studio. The unreal seems real, but color is in Overend’s treatment not simply a means to represent daily reality. He says it’s a poetic device to arrive – in concert with gestural ideas, a vigorous handling of the paint, and deliberate composition – at a deeper, truer reality. “The paintings are about discovering a kind of dynamic balance, a feeling of completeness, however temporary, much as poetry is.”

For its holiday exhibition at Gallery 80808/Vista Studios in Columbia, S.C., if ART, International Fine Art Services of Columbia presents Construction Crew II, a group exhibition with work by South Carolina artists Matt Overend, Virginia Scotchie, Christine Tedesco and Paul Yanko. Like the first if ART Construction Crew exhibition in December 2005, the show consists of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art that has strong constructional or architectural characteristics. The exhibition opens Friday, Dec. 8, with a reception from 5:00 –10:00 p.m. and runs through Dec. 19. Opening hours are weekdays, 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Saturdays, 11 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Sundays 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Overend, Scotchie, Tedesco and Yanko are represented by if ART Gallery, 1223 Lincoln St., (803) 238-2351, where additional works of art by all four artists will be on view.

Overend will show paintings of buildings and architectural structures, a new direction in his art. Scotchie will show her well-known abstracted, ceramic sculptures and objects. Textile artist Tedesco will show colorful quilts and textile pieces of different sizes, typically with abstract, geometric patterns and compositions. Yanko offers colorful, abstract paintings often with a heavily built-up surface.

Virginia Scotchie (b. 1955) is an internationally renowned ceramic artist who teaches at the University of South Carolina art department. Earlier this fall, she returned from Taiwan, where she did a major commission for the Yingge Ceramic Museum. In recent years she has been an artist in residence at the University of Hawaii and Taiwan’s Tainan National University for the Arts.

Christine Tedesco (b. 1959) is an architect and textile artist in Pendleton, S.C. Her work has been part of the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies Program, featured in Tanzania and Honduras. She has shown in the Mint Museum in Charlotte, N.C., and was included in the 2001 S.C. Triennial and the opening exhibition of New Orlean’s Ogden Museum of Southern Art in 2003.

Paul Yanko teaches at the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville. He holds an MFA in painting from Kent State University and a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. He has exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art and the McDonough Museum of Art in Youngstown, Ohio. This will be his first exhibition in Columbia.
